1916.gada 23.decembrīTīreļa purva apkārtnē sākās
leģendārās Ziemassvētku kaujas - krievu 12.armijas lielākais uzbrukums,
kurā galvenais trieciens bija jānes latviešu strēlniekiem. Pēc nedēļu ilgām cīņām
izdevās no vāciešiem atkarot Ložmetējkalnu, bet krievu ģenerāļu
nemākulīgās rīcības dēļ, kaujās vairāk nekā 5000 latviešu strēlnieku
zaudēja dzīvības.
