Hi everybody (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif)

sorry for my English

I'm curious about few things:
(1) could you write me information about latvian editions of Hobbit, LotR?
I have found in internet information about only two editions:
- First edition: 1991 edition illustrated by Laima Eglďte, and published by Spriditis
- some other edition, I have only cover

Please, could you provide me some more information about Hobbit, LotR publishing history in Latvia?
Could you write: ISBN, edition year, translator name, how many pages, ilustrated or not and maybe cover picture? (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif)

(2) Do you know address of some internet shop where I will be able to buy "Hobbit" or "LotR" in latvian language?

(3) How can I post attachments? FAQ is in latvian and unfortunatelly I don't understand it.

Thank you in advance for your answer and Greetings for all Tolkien fans from Latvia (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif)

Welcome to our forum!

(1) Publishing history is rather short - two editions of Hobbit, one edition of LoTR.

The first edition of Hobbit (database has no entry, so I am just using my own book. Sorry for flashlight reflection on the cover, and I hope I have transcribed evrerything correctly)
(IMG:http://susurs.net/webam/hobbit_old.jpg)
ISBN: 5-410-00159-1
1991 Rīga, Sprīdītis
Translated by Zane Rozenberga
Afterwrod by Zane Rozenberga
Illustrated by Laima Eglīte
194 pages
24 full color, full page illustrations + sepia illustrations before and after each chapter. Of course, Tolkienists will argue that Elfs are not exactly green, they don't have wings and have no resemblance to ents... But this was meant to be a children book. Both maps are included, but they are drawn after the original maps, not merely translated.

The recent editions of Hobbit and Lotr ( I am simply taking the entries from national library public database, which should have data about all books published in Latvian after 2001 or so. It is www.lnb.lv - but it lacks some user-friendliness, especially.)

(IMG:http://susurs.net/webam/hobits.jpg) "Hobits jeb turp un atpakaļ" - ISBN 9984224171 2002 Rīga, Zvaigzne ABC,
translated by Zane Rozenberga, 308 [7] pages, with maps, 20cm; Cover art by Aigars Truhins.

Homepage of the publishers states that this editions includes Tolkien's illustrations from the first edition of Hobbit in 1937. Sorry for the cover picture, but that's the only one I found.
---------------------------------------
LoTR:

(IMG:http://susurs.net/webam/braliba.jpg) Gredzenu pavēlnieks. 1.d. Gredzena brālība.(Fellowship of the Ring)
ISBN 9984055795
2002, Rīga Jumava

507, [11] pages. ; 23 cm.
Foreword by Andersons Dagless
Cover by Zatravkins Deniss

(IMG:http://susurs.net/webam/towers.jpg) Gredzenu pavēlnieks, 2.d. Divi torņi (The Two Towers)
ISBN 9984055795 (ies.)
2003, Rīga Jumava
Translated by Ieva Kolmane
407, [16] pages ; 23 cm.
Cover by Zatravkins Deniss

(IMG:http://susurs.net/webam/return_king.jpg) Gredzenu pavēlnieks, 3.d. Ķēniņa atgriešanās (The Return of the King)
ISBN 9984058611 (ies.)
2004, Rīga Jumava
Translated by Ieva Kolmane
350, [11] p. ; 23 cm..
Cover by Zatravkins Deniss
Appendixes not included
------------------------------
All 3 parts of LoTR looked similar - they are hardcover books, with paper jacket. Pictures above show the paper jacket, the cover itself looks like this sorry flashlight again...:
(IMG:http://susurs.net/webam/lotr_inside.jpg)
(Obviously, this is The Two Towers, but if I am not very mistaken, they all looked the same or pretty much the same)
None of the 3 books is illustrated, however they do include maps in a form of illustrations.

Unfortunatly I don't know how to help about (2), maybe someone else can?

Publisher homepages are - Zvaigzne and Jumava - maybe you can find something there.

Thank you VERY MUCH Nimue (IMG:http://forum.tolkien.com.pl/images/smiles/worshippy.gif) I'm really appreciate your work (IMG:http://forum.tolkien.com.pl/images/smiles/flower.gif)
Information which you write above are very detailed, thank you for pictures (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif) So once again, the day is save (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/grin.gif)

CITĀTS
Appendixes not included

Yes, I know this problem. In all polish edition till 1996 we don't have appendixes: E and F

Thanks a lot, Nimue (IMG:http://forum.tolkien.com.pl/images/smiles/flower2.gif) If you ever will need some information about "Tolkien" in Poland then let me know I will answer you with pleasure (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif)

CITĀTS(Starlin)
I have to say I really like the cover of GP. Even though the dustjackets ae debatable... But the cover is truly a hundred times better than the Lithuanian version!

I also like latvian covers (IMG:http://forum.tolkien.com.pl/images/smiles/yes.gif) (some editions from Poland are quite crazy but that's ok (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif) the worst are 'new modern style' covers for example with Bosch)

But about lithuanian editions I have the same question (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/grin.gif) I don't know where I should post it, on this forum or your? what da ya think? (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/wink.gif)

Greetings (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/two_handed.gif)

I've looked up the info for you...

(IMG:http://www.skaityta.lt/img/Hobitas.jpg)

"Hobitas", Bronė Balčienė, 1985, 238 p.
Ilustrated by M.Belomlinskis.

Re-released in 2002, 264 p. ("Hobitas arba ten ir atgal"), ISBN 9955-08-126-0 , cover:

(IMG:http://www.patogupirkti.lt/BooksPictures/9955-08-126-0.jpg)

The translation is not so bad, apart from a few names and pecularities which I would prefer to have been translated differently. I liked the ilustrations of the old edition very much - and for me they are the hobbittish images and have been for many years since I first had a look at that edition probably some 6 years of age!

(IMG:http://www.skaityta.lt/img/ZieduValdovas1.jpg)

ISBN 9986-02-038-7
"Žiedo brolija", 1994, Andrius Tapinas, 324p. - FotR.

Re-released in 2002, 391p., cover:

(IMG:http://www.patogupirkti.lt/BooksPictures/9986-02-038-7.gif)

(IMG:http://www.skaityta.lt/img/ZieduValdovas2.jpg)

"Dvi tvirtovės", 1998, Andrius Tapinas, 364p., ISBN 9986-02-487-0 (re-released in 2002 under the same cover) - TTT

(IMG:http://www.skaityta.lt/img/ZieduValdovas3.jpg)

"Karaliaus sugrįžimas", 2001, Andrius Tapinas, 412p., ISBN 9986-02-959-7

No ilustrations apart those by Tolkien found in every edition (Gates of Moria etc.).

The story with the translation of LotR is this: Andrius Tapinas was 14 when he translated FotR, and that was part of his participation in one English language competition. Other parts made their way some 4 years apart each (which has made me read them in English and eventually brought me to tolkienism. hurray! (IMG:http://www.kurbijkurne.lv/forums/style_emoticons/kurb_gaiss/smile.gif) ). The translation in no way could be called flawless. It fails in retaining the style, there are phrases, sentences, even paragraphs ommitted, the names should have been transcribed or translated more carefully. So not everyone is satisfied with this translation (neither the translator - he owns up to his mistakes). And also some do not like those bright red covers, saying that it is partly those ridiculous covers that cause bookshop keepers place them among children's books (frustrating, believe me!).

Now as for online shops, there are some, though I am not sure whether you will be able to order books from another country. Anyway, I am linking to them below:
