Nu tad tā - es pieteicos uzrakstīt nelielu kopsavilkumu par istariem un te nu tas ir. Par šīm būtnēm jau, protams, varētu rakstīt vēl un vēl, bet te nu ir pamats uz kura bāzes attīstīties...

Kas ir Istari?

Pašos iesākumos, pirms Pasaule vēl bija radīta, Eru, saukts arī par Iluvatoru, izveidoju grupiņu dažādas varenības garu – Ainurus.

Katram no Ainuriem Eru deva mazumiņu sev piemītošo zināšanu un īpašību. Šeit izņēmums bija Melkors, kam Eru iedeva mazumiņu no visa kā, izveidojot to par pašu varenāko Ainuru.

Pavisam drīz Aunuri tika sasaukti kopā, un tika radīta Ainuru mūzika – masveidīga dziedāšana. Šajās dziesmās Eru ielika savu pasaules vīziju, pasaules redzējumu, un tā, caur Ainuru dziesmām tapa šī pasaule.

Pēc pasaules rašanās daudzi Ainuri izjuta vēlmi doties uz šo skaisto vietu un Eru to atļāva. Šie Ainuri tika nosaukti par Valariem un Maiariem, pārējie palika dzīvot (eksistēt) ārpus laika robežām. Ainuri, kas pameta ārpus laika telpu, vairs nevarēja tur atgriesties.

Par Valariem tika nosaukti spēcīgākie no Ainuriem, kas apmetās uz dzīvi jaunizveidotajā pasaulē, bet par Maiariem – mazāk spēcīgie. Katram Valaram bija “piesaistīti” vairāki Maiari, un varētu teikt, ka Maiari bija Valaru palīgi.

Istari (tulkojumā “gudrie”) jeb burvji arī bija Maiari.


Kāpēc Istari tika sūtīti uz Viduszemi un kas viņus sūtīja?

Laiks gāja, Viduszemē notika dažādi kari un kaujas, kādā milzīgā kaujā tika sakauts un padzīts pats ļaunuma iemiesojums Melkors, bet Saurons, kas tajā laikā bija Melkora leitnants, paslēpās un nogaidīja. Vēlāk Saurons turpināja savas ļaundarības, līdz tika sakauts un zaudēja savus spēkus (Isildurs nocirta viņam pirkstu ar gredzenu). Tomēr nosacītais miers nebija ilgs. Pavisam drīz Saurons sāka atjaunot savu varenību, un sāka pulcēt jaunus karapūļus un centās atjaunot bijušo ļauno spēku varenību.

Valari to pamanīja un nolēma rīkoties. Vēlvienā cīņā viņi piedalīties nevēlējās, tomēr bija norūpējušies par Viduszemes brīvo tautu likteni, tādēļ tika sasaukta Valaru apspriede.

Nav īsti skaidrs, kas šo apspriedi sasauca un vai tā bija Valaru iniciatīva vai varbūt Eru tā izlēma, tomēr apspriede notika. Tika izlemts, ka vajag uz Viduszemi sūtīt grupiņu Maiaru, kas palīdzētu turienes tautām cīņā pret Surona atgriešanos. Šiem Maiariem bija jādodas turp ietērptiem vecu vīru izskatā un nevis pašiem jādodas cīņā, bet gan jāpārliecina cīnīties Viduszemes tautas.

Šāds uzdevums nebija viegls pat Maiaram un bija jābūt ar lielu drošsirdību apveltītam, lai piekristu doties šajā uzdevumā. Tā nu Valaru vadonis Manwe jautāja: “kurš ies?”. Tikai divi maiari panāca uz priekšu – Sarumans un Alatars – vienīgie divi drosmīgie (vai varbūt pārgalvīgie), kas nebijās uzdevuma. Tad Manwe paskatījās uz Gendalfu un jautāja kāpēc viņš negrib iet, un Gendalfs atteica, ka viņš esot par vāju tādam uzdevumam, un ka viņam esot bail no Saurona. Manwe tik noteica, ka tas ir jo labāk un pavēlēja Gendalfam piedalīties. Tālāk ir minēts, ka vēl tika paņemti maiari Polondo un Radagasts.

Tā nu šie 5 istari tika nosūtīti uz Viduszemes ziemeļ-rietumu daļu, bet, kā Tolkīns vēlāk minējis, šie nebija vienīgie istari, kas devās ceļā, jo tika nosūtīti vēl (nezināms skaits) uz citām Viduszemes daļām.

Tolkīns ir vairākkārt mainījis domas par to kādā kārtībā šie 5 istari ieradās Viduszemē – vai tie ieradās kopā, vai pa vienam. Tomēr skaidrs ir tas, ka tas notika III ēras 1000 gadā un viņi ieradās tērpušies vecu vīru izskatā un bija kā noslēpumaini radījumi apkārtējām tautām. Kā Tolkīns raksta – vien Kirdans un varbūt Elronds un Galadriela zināja, kad šīs būtnes ieradās, un domājams arī zināja (vai nojauta) par viņu uzdevumu.


Istaru liktenis Viduszemē.

Tā nu Istari izklīda pa Viduszemi, vācot dažāda veida informāciju un pētot šejienes parašas. Viņi nezināja, kad un kur Saurons varētu parādīties, tāpēc klejoja viss apkārt… Gendalfs pārsvarā uzturējās ziemeļu reģionā, Rivendellas un Hobitonas (Tuntmales) tuvumā, kamēr Sarumans vairāk pievērsās Gondoras un Rohānas apkārtnes pētīšanai, bet Radagasts devās uz Mirkwoodu (Drūmmežu). Polondo un Alatars (saukti par zilajiem burvjiem) devās tālu uz austrumiem un nekad vairs neatgriezās – nav zināms, kas ar viņiem notika, tomēr Tolkīns pauž cerību, ka abi visai ievērojami ietekmēja Saurona pazudināšanu, atturot austrumu tautas no masveidīgas pievienošanās Saurona spēkiem.

Pēc Tolkīna domām, vien Gendalfs izpildīja sev uzticēto pienākumu. Pārējie izgāzās.

Bet nu es varētu pacensties īsumā apstātīt kas un kā notika...

Tiek uzskatīts, ka Arien bija sieviešu dzimtas maiars, kas iesākumā kalpoja Vanai. Arī viņa, tāpat kā balrogi, bija uguns gars, tomēr ar to atšķirību, ka Melkoram tā arī neizdevās šo pārvilināt savā klausībā. Arien nebaidījās no karstuma un tas nevarēja ievainot viņu. Droši vien tieši tas bija galvenais iemesls, kāpēc Valari izvēlējās viņu par saules (Telperiona augļa Anar) "stūrētāju"...

Tilions, saukts arī par Ilinsor, allaž tika uzskatīts par varenu starp Valariem un Maiariem. Viņš, tāpat kā Arien, bija maiars (vīriešu dzimtas). Iesākumā Tilions kalpoja pie Orome un medīja kopā ar viņu. Tilions ļoti bieži mēdza doties uz Lorienu un atpūsties tur Telperiona pavēnī un gaismā un varētu teikt, ka tieši tad viņš arī iemīlējās šai kokā un vēlāk lūdza, lai atļauj šim kļūt par mēness (Telperiona zieda Isil) "stūrētāju"...

Par šiem notikumiem varat daudz lasīt Silmarillion-ā:

The flower of Telperion was called Isil, the Sheen, by the Vanyar; the fruit was called Anar, the Fire-golden. These we know as the Moon and the Sun. The Noldor called them Rįna, the Wayward, and Vįsa, the Heart of Fire. To the Noldor, the Sun was set as a sign for the awakening of Men, and waning of the Elves, but the Moon cherishes their memories.

The Valar chose one of the maidens of the Maiar named Arien to guide the Sun. In the days of the Trees, Arien tended the golden flowers in the gardens of Vįna and watered them with the bright dews of Laurelin. From the beginning she was a spirit of fire whose form was a flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour. She often took a physical form, but her eyes were so bright that the Eldar could not look on them. She had not been deceived by Melkor nor drawn to his service.

Tilion was chosen to guide the Moon. He was a hunter of the company of Oromė and had a silver bow. He loved silver; when he rested he would go to Lórien and dream by the pool of Estė in Telperion's flickering beams.

Par turpmākiem notikumiem un to, kā abiem maiariem veicās, pildot savus pienākumus, nolēmu nestāstīt.. labāk būs, ja paši to izlasīsiet -

Isil was ready first, and rose into the realm of the stars; it was the elder of the new lights even as Telperion was the elder of the Two Trees. For a while, the world had moonlight and many things stirred and woke from the sleep of Yavanna. The servants of Morgoth were filled with amazement; but the Elves in the Outer Lands looked up in delight, and even as the Moon arose from the darkness in the West, Fingolfin let blow his silver trumpets and began his march into Middle-earth.

Tilion crossed the heavens seven times and was in the far East when Anar was ready. Anar rose in glory, and the first dawn of the Sun was like a fire upon the towers of the Pelóri; the clouds of Middle-earth were kindled. Morgoth was dismayed and he descended into the depths of Angband. He withdrew his servants and send forth dark clouds to high his land from the light of the Daystar.

Varda gave the containers the power to cross the lower regions of Ilmen, and gave them a track above the Earth starting in Valinor from the West, travelling to the East and then to return.

Varda wanted the two lights to be in the Ilmen at all times but not together. Thus, the first few days were light the days during the Two Trees; from the mingling of the lights when Arien and Tilion passed on their appointed rounds above the middle of the Earth. There was no night and the stars were not visible.

But Tilion was wayward and did not have a consistant speed. He did not keep to his appointed path; he wanted to be nearer to Arien, being drawn by her splendour, even though the flame of Arnar scorched him and the island of the moon was darkened.

In addition, Lórien and Estė came to Varda and told her that the world did not have sleep and rest; the stars were hidden. Varda changed her mind and decided that the world should have a time with only shadow and half light. So it was that Anar rested for awhile on the Outer Sea in the West; but was then drawn down by the servants of Ulmo, who pulled it under the Earth to the oceans on the East.

Varda commanded the Moon to follow the Sun in the same manner; passing under the Earth to arise in the East. But Tilion went with an uncertain pace, and still he is drawn toward Arien; often both the Sun and Moon are seen together in the sky.

It was by the coming and going of Anar that Time was reckoned. For Tilion stayed little in Valinor, but would pass over Avathar or Araman, and plunge in the chasm beyond the Outer Sea, pursuing his way alone amid the caverns at the root of Arda. Often he would wander and late he would return.

Still the light in Valinor was greater and fairer than in Middle-earth for the Sun rested there, and the lights of heaven drew nearer to Earth in that region. But neither the Sun nor the Moon has the same light as the Two Trees before they were touched by the poison of Ungoliant. That light lives in the Silmarils alone.

Morgoth hated the new lights. He assaulted Tilion, sending spirits of Shadow against him. There was strife in Ilmen beneath the paths of the stars, but Tilion was victorious. Morgoth did not come near Arien; he no longer had the power to come close to her. For as he grew in malice and sent forth from himself the lies and other creatures of his wickedness, his power passed into them and was dispersed; he became more and more powerless, bound to the earth, unwilling to leave his dark strongholds. With shadows he hid himself and his servants from Arien
